50 Finsbury Square occupies a key corner location on Finsbury Square between the City and the tech hub of Old Street. The original building was to the designs of Norman Foster + Partners and was built over 20 years ago. Architects Doone Silver Kerr have repatriated the building, maintaining the floor plate and structure, with some amendments to create more versatile and future-proofed office space. The revitalized building is designed to produce 60% fewer operational carbon emissions than the existing building, and has resulted in substantial embodied carbon savings through its reuse. Szerelmey were contracted to carry out remedial works to the existing steel substructure, replacing four x 12 meter steel beams, installing 76 stainless steel mullions (6-8 meters long) using a tower crane, installing 917 precast transoms (3 meters long) using Nico Rails. Finally, Szerelmey have installed new German Jura limestone cladding to three elevations across eight levels and have designed and installed an internal stone feature wall using stone salvaged from the exterior.
