Victoria is currently undergoing a massive regeneration scheme which has resulted in a number of prestigious new buildings. Szerelmey have been involved in many of these including the substantial new residential block by Lynch Architects, Kings Gate House. This building is one of two adjacent buildings designed by Lynch, the other being a commercial block called the Zigzag.
Szerelmey have undertaken all the external stone cladding to the south, east and west elevations using Jura limestone from Germany. The cladding is unusual in design with large rectangular blocks and imposing stone fins, offset floor on floor, and supported on pre-cast concrete columns. The fins, which are 3 metres tall, were shipped from Germany to Portland to be assembled and transported direct to the site in single units. The Szerelmey design team also created custom-made fixings and installation methods.
This job posed some challenges, in particular we were unable to use scaffolding due to space, time and cost limitations, so all installation work was undertaken using mast climbing equipment.
