British Museum

The British Museum project has involved new build and extensive restoration work. Working in close collaboration with Rogers Stirk Harbour & Partners, Szerelmey installed slender panels of Portland stone to the external aspect of the steel structure of the new lift and stair core elevations. The panels weigh approximately 42 kilos, cover an area of 1,100 square meters, and were installed using XBT fixings to which kerf railings were attached. The Restoration Team undertook works externally and internally working with Purcell architects. This included general facade repairs and cleaning. Areas of Portland stone mouldings were re-carved and brick and stone repairs were carried out.

Internally the Cracherode and Palestine room floors were re-laid using reclaimed slate and York stone. The team created four new openings from the Great Court into the Cracherode and Palestine rooms to form the new main visitor route from the Wellcome Gallery. Further work was carried out on the new Bells Landing including re-flooring the area using a hollow floor system. Szerelmey also worked on the four storey high Crittal windows, replacing the window cills and adding pad stones to the link bridges.
