Private Scottish publishing house DC Thomson & Co has moved into 184-186 Fleet Street following extensive refurbishment undertaken by Szerelmey. The building, which still retains the original printing presses, was completely cleaned and restored by Szerelmey externally, while the company also carried out important work to the interior.

The exterior brickwork and stonework was cleaned using a combination of DOFF and JOS methods, and in situ repairs were carried out. This included replacing specially moulded bricks that were made as bespoke pieces by Lambs. Damaged stone work was replaced like-for-like using Bath stone reproduced to match the original lines and detailing. Window jambs and mullions were cleaned, repaired and repointed and an impressive hand-carved stone sign with the building’s name was installed. A touch of glamour was added to the exterior though the installation of Dakota Mahogany granite cladding to the ground floor level.

Internally Szerelmey installed semi-circular quadrant stone pieces to clad circular, supporting, internal steel columns running from ground to 5th floor level.
